Perspective - Tunnels and Lanes

In the previous post I continued to investigate street photography images that are built around a "subject", and in particular people.
Anyway, I examined images where people are there just to give meaning to the context, which represents the real subject of the photo.

In this post, we will abandon "subject" related photos to explore images that are built around another main element of black and white photography: "perspective".

Perspectives are a powerful way of capturing the viewer's eye, can often provide an unusual and thus interesting view of even common places, and can help leading the attention towards maybe the main subject of an image.

Our cities are full of beautiful and easy to capture perspectives: buildings, narrow lanes, even streets themselves, just try to avoid being too trivial.

Tunnels

Looking around I was surprised to notice how common is the subject of tunnels in street photography.
Of course, tunnels (in their different forms) offer great perspectives and, with the addition of an interesting subject at the end of the tunnel, can become powerful images.
They also benefit of the light/shadows contrasts, another important element in black and white photography.
Let's see some great examples from Instagram.

And this is my own interpretation of this element.

Tree-lined avenues

These are particular examples of tunnels, just the walls are replaced with trees.
They still keep the main elements of tunnels, mainly the perspective and a sense of inclusion and direction.

Some examples from fellow Instagrammers.

And my personal contribution.

Narrow village lanes

In the same area fall those beautiful narrow lanes, which can be usually found in european small villages that have a long history.
These also add to the picture some awesome buildings, windows, balconies, hanging clothes and so on.
Lights and shadows also rule in these pictures, and people can give even more strength to them.
Here are some great examples.

In the next post, we stay in the area of perspective to take a look at more main elements in street photography: buildings and stairs.
